Accommodation

There are different options available when looking for the type of accommodation that best suits your needs - the most common being:

-  Living with family or relatives
-  Living with friends
-  Living in rented accommodation

Driving in NZ

New Zealand driving is on the left side of the road.  Students used to driving on the right side have to be very cautious while getting accustomed to NZ rules.
You can use an international drivers licence for one year from the date you arrive in NZ.   After that you must take a theory and practical test (some countries are exempt from having to do the practical test).   For more information contact Land Transport NZ – www.ltsa.govt.nz .   If you need any further assistance contact the Student Welfare Advisor.

Employment Support

Most students plan to start full time work after one year of study at NCBT.  To assist students in finding work, a voluntary programme has been established.  This has been extremely successful in providing students with valuable NZ work experience and NZ professional references.

Safety

New Zealand is a relatively safe destination but is not crime free.  Just as you  would in your home country, look after yourself and your possessions during your time New Zealand. Do not put yourself in unsafe situations, or leave your valuable possessions where somebody else could easily take them.  If you find yourself in a situation where you need help dial 111.

Improve Language and Communication

It is essential to improve your English language as well as integrating into the NZ way of living.  While studying at NCBT make an effort to get to know New Zealanders so you can practice your English and speak English at all times while at the college.  Be aware that there are students and staff who will not understand a foreign language.
This will allow you to improve your English language and speaking skills.

Many organizations in NZ have policies stating that you can only speak English during working hours even though you may be working with people who speak the same language as you.  Join a club such as a sports club, a toastmasters club (an excellent way to improve your speaking skills), or voluntary organisation - for example SPCA.    If you need any assistance please contact any of  NCBT’s staff members.

Seminars

During the study year different organizations including Citizens Advice Bureau, the Human Rights Commission, and the Police will be invited to conduct seminars to inform students about NZ Laws.

Bank Account

Most banks have special accounts for International students.  In most cases this includes no fees and other beneficial options.  It is recommended that you ask for options from different banks to find the bank that suits your needs.  Banks close to the college are:

ASB                      296 Dominion Road, Mt Eden, Auckland
National Bank    205 Queen Street, Auckland
BNZ                      281 Dominion Road, Mt Eden, Auckland
HSBC                   290 Queen Street, Auckland
Westpac             184 Dominion Road, Mt Eden

Buying a Car

NZ has a large used car market and it is easy to purchase a car in great condition at a great price.   It is recommended that you find someone who can assist you in the process of finding the right car to ensure your car is mechanically sound.   One of the biggest internet sites to find cars is www.trademe.co.nz .  There are also lots of used car dealers located throughout Auckland.   Look at www.yellowpages.co.nz for further details.
